Pune News: Puppy Allegedly Burned Alive, NGO Under Investigation For Animal CrueltyÂ
In a deeply disturbing incident of animal cruelty, a puppy was allegedly burned alive by staff at an NGO-run animal shelter in Pune. The shocking case has drawn attention to the shelter’s poor conditions and accusations of financial fraud.
The incident came to light when Gahunje Road resident, Anupran Trivedi, rescued a dog named Shadow from an attack by stray dogs. Unable to manage the dog’s behavior, Trivedi sought help from a shelter in Marunji, run by NGO owner Rohit Chowdhary. However, upon visiting the shelter, Trivedi discovered the facility was in a poor state, with scared, malnourished dogs and inadequate lighting. Despite these concerns, Trivedi left Shadow at the shelter, paying a fee of ₹12,000 and donating supplies.
Days later, when Trivedi sought updates on Shadow, he was told the dog had contracted rabies. Suspicious of this explanation, Trivedi sent a friend to inspect the shelter. The conditions remained appalling, and villagers reported hearing a dog in distress. Upon investigation, they found a dog’s carcass resembling Shadow’s, raising serious concerns about the animal’s fate.
Further scrutiny into the shelter revealed more troubling details. Nilesh Khare, president of the Society for Animal Safety, India, shared videos showing the shelter in disarray, with animals in dire conditions, some caged and others dead. Khare also alleged that the NGO was involved in a ₹20 lakh fraud, raising questions about the shelter’s operations and financial dealings.
The Hinjawadi Police have acknowledged the complaint and are in the process of launching a formal investigation into both the cruelty allegations and the financial irregularities. The NGO owner, Chowdhary, is reportedly missing, leaving the shelter without caretakers and the animals in critical need of help.
Volunteers have since stepped in to care for the neglected animals, urging the public for donations to improve their living conditions and provide much-needed support.
