In a surprising move, politicians from Pune have collectively paid Rs 17 crore in overdue property taxes to secure No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for their Assembly election nominations. This sudden payment of dues, typically ignored due to political influence, is a result of the NOC requirement aimed at curbing arrears .

According to PMC officials, many candidates, some of whom had neglected their tax responsibilities for years, cleared substantial arrears to avoid disqualification. Candidates contesting the Assembly elections must submit around 35 NOCs with their applications, including those from government offices like property tax and water supply departments.

However, the state government’s decision to suspend tax collection in 34 newly incorporated villages has impacted the revenue of the municipal corporation. Villagers have long demanded an exemption from municipal taxes, citing inadequate infrastructural facilities. This suspension is expected to reduce municipal income significantly, from Rs 2,600 crore to Rs 2,300-2,350 crore.

The PMC faces a setback in revenue collection, with over Rs 500 crore in outstanding property tax dues from recently incorporated villages. Plans to recover these arrears have been disrupted by recent government decisions, including the suspension of penalty collections during the Lok Sabha elections.

The reduced income will likely impact key projects, as the PMC struggles to sustain its ongoing initiatives due to a significant dip in revenue. With funds from the state government supporting large-scale initiatives, complaints persist regarding delays in daily operations and maintenance work for city infrastructure.

The PMC’s financial strain is evident, with over Rs 1,000 crore in property tax arrears from merged villages . As the municipal corporation navigates this challenging situation, Pune residents await the outcome of the Assembly elections and its impact on the city’s infrastructure and development.
