Pune Railway Station Deploys 160 AI-Powered CCTV Cameras To Boost Passenger Safety
Pune, July 22, 2026: Passenger safety at Pune Railway Station has received a major technological upgrade with the installation of 160 artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition, 4K resolution, and night vision capabilities.
The advanced surveillance system has been introduced by the Pune Railway Division to strengthen security at one of the busiest railway stations in the region, which handles more than 1.5 lakh passengers daily.

According to railway officials, the new CCTV network is designed to detect suspicious activities, identify known criminals, locate missing persons, and monitor overcrowding at key areas of the station.
Real-Time Alerts for Railway Protection Force
The AI-powered cameras have been integrated with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) database containing photographs of known offenders. If a wanted individual enters the camera’s field of view, the system will automatically send an alert to the RPF control room, enabling immediate action.
The facial recognition system will also assist in tracing missing persons. Once a missing person’s photograph is uploaded into the system, the AI cameras can identify the individual anywhere within the station premises and instantly notify security personnel.
Additionally, the surveillance system is capable of detecting excessive crowding on foot overbridges and other high-footfall areas, allowing authorities to respond quickly and prevent potential safety risks.
160 New Cameras Installed
Pune Railway Station currently has 235 CCTV cameras, including 160 newly installed AI-enabled cameras and 75 older cameras. Railway authorities plan to phase out the older surveillance units over the next six months.
Of the newly installed cameras, 19 are high-definition 4K cameras, providing enhanced image clarity for more accurate monitoring and identification.
Key Features of the New CCTV System
The AI-enabled surveillance system includes:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based monitoring
- Facial recognition technology
- Night vision capability for round-the-clock surveillance
- High-definition 4K cameras
- Automatic alerts for suspicious activities and known offenders
- Crowd monitoring and congestion detection
Officials Expect Significant Improvement in Security
Hemant Kumar Behra, Public Relations Officer of the Pune Railway Division, said the new smart surveillance system will significantly enhance passenger safety.
“The AI-powered CCTV network will enable authorities to respond swiftly to suspicious or dangerous situations by providing real-time alerts. This will substantially strengthen security at Pune Railway Station,” he said.
The installation comes at a time when passenger footfall at Pune Railway Station has increased further following its seamless connectivity with the Pune Metro network. Railway officials said the cameras have been strategically installed at the main entrances, platforms, and pedestrian bridges, ensuring 24×7 surveillance across the station premises.
