In the Lamba Ki Dhani region of Rajasthan’s Neem Ka Thana district, a wedding ceremony took a surprising twist when the groom allegedly asked for a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and a motorcycle from the bride’s family right after the marriage rituals were finished. This demand sparked a fierce argument, and the bride declined to go to her in-laws’ home, which ultimately led to the groom being arrested.

On Tuesday, November 12, Anju Jakhar, a local woman, married Vikram, a constable with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police from Chala village. Although the wedding went well initially, tensions arose when the groom demanded a dowry as the bidaai preparations were starting.

After completing the wedding rounds, Vikram reportedly started demanding extra dowry and a bullet motorcycle before letting the bride leave. The bride’s family, however, declined to fulfill these requests. Additionally, it has been reported that the groom acted rudely and inappropriately towards Anju during the wedding rituals and was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

The situation intensified when Vikram reportedly grabbed Anju’s hand and attempted to pull her towards the car, disregarding her objections. Anju pushed back, insisting that she would not accompany him. As the conflict escalated between the two families, the bride’s relatives stepped in and restrained Vikram, preventing him from leaving the venue.

As the dispute between the two families escalated, the bride’s family called the police. Officers from the Neem Ka Thana police station arrived and took both parties to the station. During the questioning, Anju accused her husband of misbehaving throughout the evening, including during the wedding ceremony. She stated that Vikram and his relatives demanded dowry from her brothers, who were unable to meet those demands.

Anju further claimed that Vikram and his family treated her and the women at the wedding disrespectfully, maintaining their inappropriate behavior throughout the night.

After the police intervened, a case was registered against Vikram and his family. The police arrested Vikram, his father Karan Singh, his maternal uncles Kailash and Karan Singh, and his younger brother Rajveer Singh on charges of disturbing the peace and causing public disorder.

This incident garnered considerable attention, prompting local authorities to reaffirm their commitment to taking strict action against dowry-related demands and ensuring justice for women in similar situations.
