Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has faced significant criticism following a job advertisement for a chief of staff position, which required the selected candidate to contribute ₹20 lakh for the role.
Deepinder Goyal faced backlash for requesting a job candidate to pay ₹20 lakh for a position at Zomato.
Goyal announced a chief of staff position, stating that the chosen applicant will not receive a salary during the first year. Instead, they are required to contribute ₹20 lakh to secure the opportunity to work with him.
Goyal, 41, posted the job opportunity on his X account, stating:“There is no salary for this role for the first year. You will have to, in fact, pay ₹20 lacs for this opportunity.”
The founder and CEO of Zomato clarified that the entirety of this ‘fee’ will be contributed as a donation to Feeding India, which is Zomato’s non-profit organization.
The selected candidate will receive the standard salary starting from the second year, which he assured would be more than ₹50 LPA.
The chief of staff position not only required the capability to make a one-time payment of ₹20 lakhs but also sought an individual who possessed significant common sense, empathy, and minimal experience. The announcement included details on the application process for the role.
The job description outlined that the Chief of Staff will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Zomato, engaging in a wide range of activities, including significant projects such as Blinkit, District, Hyperpure, and Feeding India.
The article clarified the rationale for requiring candidates to invest in the position, emphasizing that the goal was to prioritize learning over merely securing a prestigious, high-paying job that might enhance one’s image among peers or oneself.
Goyal’s unusual job posting soon attracted a wave of online mockery, as numerous users expressed their worries and dissatisfaction.One user added, “As if exploring the Gig economy workers wasn’t enough, now kick the middle class parent cause a food delivery company with inflated pricing wants a chief of staff.. Just say you want to test 100 people in 1 year without paying.”
