Viral video sparks debate over road safety and visibility concerns on the busy highway.

A dramatic incident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway (NH-48) has gone viral after a speeding car struck a construction ramp near the Talasari flyover and went airborne for nearly 25 feet. The video, widely shared on social media, has triggered discussions around road conditions and safety measures.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning during ongoing white-topping work on NH-48. While no injuries or casualties were reported, motorists claim the ramp was not visible due to inadequate warnings. However, Sumit Kumar, General Manager (Technical) of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), told news agency, that warning boards, including “Go Slow” and “Ramp Ahead,” were in place to alert drivers.

Authorities at Thane’s Programme Implementation Unit (PIU) clarified that the construction is carried out lane by lane, with traffic managed on the remaining lanes. Despite these measures, frequent complaints have been raised regarding missing dividers, uneven lane heights, and insufficient signage on the 121 km stretch from Dahisar to Achhad near the Gujarat border.

Harbans Singh Nanade, an activist from Palghar, highlighted how spotting ramps becomes particularly challenging at night. “The absence of proper dividers and the ongoing lane-by-lane construction make the highway unsafe, especially in low-visibility conditions,” he said.

Netizens React

Social media users reacted with humor and sarcasm after the video surfaced. One user quipped, “Doesn’t look like a 20 or 25 feet jump. It was hardly a 3 feet jump,” while another commented, “He meant long jump, not high jump.” Other responses ranged from witty remarks like “Space technology launching pad” to critiques such as “World-class national highway.”

The viral incident has reignited debates on the quality of road safety infrastructure and the need for better signage during construction work. With growing traffic on NH-48, authorities face mounting pressure to address motorists’ concerns and ensure safer driving conditions.
