The Mahayuti government has made a significant decision in its cabinet meeting on Tuesday, announcing that Fastag will be mandatory for all vehicles in Maharashtra starting from April 1, 2025. This decision will be implemented statewide from that date. However, it remains to be seen how vehicle owners will respond to this move and how it will impact toll booths and traffic congestion.

The central government had already made FastTag compulsory for all four-wheelers from January 1, 2021, under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This requirement applied to vehicles registered after December 1, 2017, including M and N category vehicles. Despite this, full implementation of the rule has not yet occurred in many states.

Fastag is a sticker or tag placed on the windshield of vehicles, scanned by toll booth scanners using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The toll amount is automatically deducted from the linked bank account or prepaid wallet without the need for the vehicle to stop at the toll plaza. The vehicle owner receives an SMS alert once the toll is deducted.
