The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a comprehensive structural audit of all bridges and culverts in the city, including those over nullahs, drains, canals, and rivers. This move comes two years after the PMC identified urgent repairs for 38 river bridges, with work on 27 of them stalled due to funding issues.
The new audit, expected to be completed within six months, aims to assess the safety and condition of all bridges and culverts in the city. This decision was prompted by concerns over flyover safety after cracks appeared in the pillars and bearings of the Hadapsar flyover in 2022.
In response to the Hadapsar flyover incident, the PMC initiated a structural audit of flyovers over a decade old. A private consultancy service conducted the study, which assessed the traffic-worthiness of these flyovers.
During the previous survey, the PMC had estimated that ā¹35 crore was required to complete the necessary repairs on 38 river bridges. However, with only ā¹15 crore allocated at the time, repairs were completed on 11 bridges, while work on the remaining 27 bridges was deferred to the second phase.
The PMC’s Project Department will undertake the structural audit of bridges and culverts over drains, streams, and canals. Yuvraj Deshmukh, chief superintendent engineer of the Project Department, PMC, stated, “The bridges over drains, streams, and canals are currently operational, but it is crucial to determine their exact condition.” He emphasized that repair works will be prioritized based on the audit findings to mitigate future risks and ensure public safety.
The audit will provide a comprehensive assessment of the city’s bridge infrastructure, enabling the PMC to take proactive measures to prevent potential disasters and ensure the safety of citizens.
