The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to present a comprehensive report outlining strategies to manage the city’s pollution over the next two decades. MPCB Chairman Siddhesh Kadam shared this information during a press interaction on Tuesday, following a review meeting with PMC officials.

Kadam, accompanied by senior MPCB officers, evaluated PMC’s ongoing pollution control measures. In the meeting, officials discussed critical issues, including sewage treatment, air pollution mitigation, solid waste management, and pollution control at crematoriums. Kadam emphasized the importance of forecasting future pollution scenarios and crafting actionable strategies.

PMC officials presented their efforts, highlighting plans to install ten new sewage treatment plants under the JICA project to reduce river pollution. However, the implementation of these projects will take time. In the interim, Kadam suggested exploring local wastewater treatment solutions to prevent untreated sewage from entering rivers.

Kadam emphasized the need for community involvement, urging housing societies to maintain their sewage treatment plants and citizens to adopt eco-friendly alternatives for cremation, such as electric or gas-based systems, to reduce air pollution.

The board concluded by reiterating its commitment to assisting PMC in achieving sustainable pollution control goals.
