Jasprit Bumrah Wins ICC Cricketer of the Year 2024, Secures Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024, receiving the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the award on Tuesday, recognizing Bumrah’s outstanding performances across all formats of cricket throughout the year.

A Year of Dominance

Bumrah defeated strong contenders, including Travis Head, Joe Root, and Harry Brook, to clinch the accolade. He becomes the fifth Indian to win this prestigious award, joining the ranks of Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018).

Earlier, Bumrah was also named the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year, capping off an extraordinary year of cricketing achievements.

The 2024 season saw Bumrah deliver sensational performances, including becoming the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. His exploits earned him the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test Bowling Rankings, with an unprecedented 907 rating points—the highest ever for an Indian bowler.

In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah claimed 32 wickets, earning him the Player of the Series award. The Indian spearhead finished 2024 as the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 71 wickets in just 13 matches. This tally is second only to Kapil Dev’s record for the most wickets by an Indian pacer in a calendar year.
