Mumbai Airport Operator Plans to Demolish Terminal 1 for Redevelopment Aimed at Expanding Passenger Capacity
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) announced on Tuesday that Terminal 1 will undergo demolition and redevelopment to enhance its passenger handling capacity.
The operation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is overseen by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which is under the management of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL).
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) announced on Tuesday that Terminal 1 will undergo demolition and redevelopment to enhance its passenger handling capacity. The project is set to begin in a phased approach starting in November, followed by construction of the new terminal. Once complete, the new T1 will be able to manage 20 million passengers annually, a 42 percent boost in capacity, the release said.
The work for the new T1 is scheduled for completion in 2028-29.
T2 and the Navi Mumbai International Airport will manage the capacity gap created by the demolition of T1.
In November 2025, the redevelopment of Terminal 1 will take place in meticulously organized stages to minimize disruption. Throughout the construction period, Terminal 2 (T2) will accommodate the increased passenger flow.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is under development by the Adani Group, is set to commence operations within this year.
“The team at CSMIA is working tirelessly with our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with minimum disruption to daily operations or passenger experience. This redevelopment is not only about expanding capacity—it is about future proofing our city’s place on the global stage,” AAHL Director Jeet Adani said.
