Hydrogen Train in India:
Indian Railways is set to enter into a new era of mobility introducing India’s first hydrogen train marking a major milestone in Indian Railways’ efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
In a significant boost to this endeavor, the Ministry of Railways allocated a substantial ₹2800 crore in the fiscal year 2023-24 to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable transportation future.
U Subba Rao, General Manager (GM), ICF unveil date
India’s first hydrogen train is expected to be rolled out by the end of March 31, 2025. Indicating the launch date of India’s first Hydrogen train U Subba Rao, General Manager (GM), ICF said, “We are actively working on the flagship Hydrogen Fuel Cell train set project. The production of hydrogen fuel cell coaches is currently underway at ICF, and we anticipate the train set to be ready by March 25”.
India achieves a global milestone with the world’s most powerful Hydrogen Train capacity of 1,200 horsepower (HP), surpassing global benchmarks. While other countries have developed hydrogen trains with capacities ranging from 500 to 600 HP.
The upcoming hydrogen train will boast 8 passenger coaches, accommodating more than 2,500 travelers, and 2 dedicated coaches for housing hydrogen cylinders. With a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour, this eco-friendly train is poised to revolutionize sustainable transportation in India. The train’s design has been expertly crafted by the Research, Design, and Standard Organisation in Lucknow. India has also made its footprints in the global platform while countries like Germany and China have already been working on the hydrogen trains.
First Hydrogen train will run on the route
The country’s first hydrogen-powered train has been allocated to Northern Railway’s Delhi Division, with plans to operate it on the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat section. Initially slated for launch in December 2024, the train’s debut has been rescheduled for March 2025.
