Pune: A woman residing on Sinhagad Road has passed away due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) while undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital. This marks the first reported fatality from the rare neurological disorder in Pune, raising concerns among residents. The deceased had been receiving medical care after being diagnosed with GBS, a condition that can lead to paralysis and severe complications. According to hospital officials, the woman’s condition had worsened despite intensive medical intervention.

Health authorities have urged the public to remain cautious but not panic. They advised residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as weakness, tingling sensations, or difficulty in movement—common early indicators of GBS.

Pune has recently seen a rise in GBS cases, with health experts investigating potential links to water contamination and other environmental factors. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken steps to strengthen healthcare infrastructure by appointing neurologists for specialized GBS treatment. Meanwhile, state health officials are considering formulating a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for monitoring drinking water quality.
