Pune City Police have held four young men accused of creating and disseminating Instagram reels that glorify gangster Gajanan Marne, with titles like ‘King of Pune City Gajanan Maharaj Marne’, thereby promoting criminal activities
According to police reports, the four accused individuals have been identified: Akshay Shinde, 20, a resident of Ahilyanagar; Siddharth Jadhav, 19, from Hadapsar; and Sahil Shaikh and Irfan Shaikh, both 19, hailing from Dharashiv district.
Police have uncovered 13 Instagram reels that glorify notorious gangster Gajanan Marne of Kothrud, and have implicated four suspects in the circulation of objectionable content promoting the criminal. Some of these reels, even showcased drone footage of Marne’s fleet of vehicles, often used by him and his associates. This crackdown on social media glorification of gangsters is part of a larger effort to monitor and regulate online content promoting criminal activities.
Authorities believe these reels were intentionally uploaded to boost followers. Their strategy appears to have been successful, with each of their handles garnering over 90,000 followers by leveraging Marne’s notoriety.
A case has been registered at the Kothrud police station against the individuals responsible for operating the 13 Instagram accounts. The accused have been detained under sections 223 (disobedience to orders from public servants), 353 (1) for spreading false information, (b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, stated the police.
A team headed by Senior Police Inspector Vijay Kumbhar and the Deputy Commissioner of Police Nikhil Pingale of the Crime Branch is probing social media reels that glorify criminals. Pune City Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has instructed the police to take continued action against objectionable reels and social media content that promote criminals.
