PUNE: A 60-year-old man from Warje-Malwadi succumbed to suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Sassoon General Hospital (SGH), taking Maharashtra’s suspected GBS death toll to five. The state also reported nine new suspected cases from Pune district, pushing the total number of cases to 149, health officials confirmed.

The deceased, who had a history of hypertension, developed symptoms of acute gastroenteritis on January 16 and was admitted to SGH. He was in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) on ventilator support and passed away around 12:30 PM on Friday.

The cause of death was identified as respiratory failure with autonomic dysfunction, quadriplegia, and GBS, compounded by hypertension. SGH officials stated that the patient had no recent travel history.

Out of the 149 suspected cases, 124 have been confirmed as GBS. “Currently, 31 patients are on oxygen support, while 28 are on ventilator support,” said Dr. Babita Kamlapurkar, Joint Director of Health Services, Maharashtra.

The cases are distributed across Pune district, with 29 from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas, 82 from newly added PMC villages, 17 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 13 from Pune rural, and eight from other districts.

On Friday, Pune reported two other suspected GBS-related deaths—a 36-year-old man from Pimple Gurav and a 60-year-old man from DSK Vishwa in Dhayari.

To combat the outbreak, Dr. Nina Borade, PMC’s health chief, announced the deployment of a mobile clinic to treat gastroenteritis patients in affected areas, with 80 patients treated so far. “Free GBS treatment is available at Kamla Nehru Hospital, and the cost of nerve conduction velocity tests for GBS diagnosis will be covered by PMC. Additionally, physiotherapy services for discharged GBS patients are now available at Laigude Hospital,” Dr. Borade added.
