Pune: Despite being in the winter season, Pune and the rest of Maharashtra have been experiencing above-normal temperatures since the beginning of February. However, the city is expected to see a significant drop in minimum temperature in the next 24 hours and once again towards the end of the month.

Both minimum and maximum temperatures in Pune have consistently ranged between 14 and 15 degrees Celsius, which is four to five degrees higher than normal. However, after a relatively warm spell, temperatures—especially the minimum—are expected to dip in Pune and the north-central parts of Maharashtra.

S. D. Sanap, senior meteorologist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, stated, “From today onwards, the city is likely to experience a drop in temperature. Compared to the past 12 days, the minimum temperature is expected to fall to around 13 degrees Celsius. This will be the first temperature drop in February, with another expected towards the end of the month.”

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the weather forecasting division at IMD Pune, added, “North-central Maharashtra and Pune district are likely to experience a two to four-degree Celsius drop in night temperatures between February 12 and 14.”

Meanwhile, the IMD has ruled out heatwave-like conditions in Pune. “Although temperatures in Pune are above normal, they do not meet the criteria for a heatwave. A heatwave is declared only when the temperature reaches or exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and is four to six degrees above normal,” an IMD official clarified.
