Pune: Maharashtra has reported another death due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), with a 59-year-old male patient succumbing to the illness at a private hospital in Pune. This brings the total number of GBS-related deaths in the state to eight. As of now, Maharashtra has recorded 203 cases of GBS.

The deceased was a resident of Sant Rohidas Nagar in Khadakwasla. He was admitted to the hospital on February 10, experiencing weakness and mobility issues. A nerve conduction velocity test confirmed GBS, and despite receiving treatment, he passed away on Tuesday night, February 11.

The first GBS-related death was reported in Solapur, involving a patient who had traveled from Pune. Since then, six deaths have occurred in Pune and one in Pimpri-Chinchwad, according to health department officials.

Of the 203 cases reported across the state, 176 have been confirmed as GBS. Pune city accounts for 41 cases, the newly merged villages within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have reported 94 cases, Pimpri-Chinchwad has 29 cases, and Pune rural areas have 31 cases. Other districts have reported eight cases collectively.

Currently, 52 patients are under intensive care, with 20 on ventilators. Meanwhile, 109 patients have recovered and been discharged.
