'Itna market cap hai toh BSE mein list karo na': Viral matrimonial ad citing ₹500 Crore+ market cap baffles social media

A unique matrimonial ad published in a newspaper has created quite a buzz on social media because of its unusual style. Instead of the usual focus on age, education, and family background, this ad emphasized financial status, notably mentioning a “500 Crore+ market cap.”

The ad, placed by a business family from Mumbai, was looking for a suitable Marwari or Gujarati groom for their 28-year-old daughter. However, the use of the term “market cap,” which is generally associated with publicly traded companies, left many users on social media confused and amused. Some questioned the ad’s authenticity, while others speculated that the term might have been used incorrectly instead of net worth.

The ad quickly gained attention online, sparking discussions about its purpose, possible implications, and how arranged marriages in elite business circles are evolving. Matrimonial ads typically highlight a bride or groom’s education, profession, caste, and family background, but this one stood out with its business-like terminology.

The use of “market cap,” which refers to the total value of a company’s outstanding shares, indicated a more business-focused mindset rather than a personal approach to finding a match. Many users highlighted that market capitalization is not equivalent to net worth. While a company with a high market cap may seem financially robust, it doesn’t necessarily indicate profitability. This sparked speculation that the family might have intended to highlight their net worth but accidentally used the term “market cap.”

The ad’s peculiar phrasing led to a flurry of humorous and skeptical reactions from social media users. Many found the inclusion of financial terms in a marriage proposal to be funny, likening it to a business transaction rather than a romantic union. One user jokingly asked, “Is this a business merger or a marriage proposal?”

A second person noted, “Families with a net worth of ₹500 crore+ wouldn’t need to advertise in a ₹5 newspaper. They have elite networks to find matches.

While another quipped, “If you have such a high market cap, why not list it on the Bombay Stock Exchange instead of putting it in a newspaper?”

Another person remarked, “Common sense tells you this is fake. You don’t need to be an intellectual to see it.”

Some people even dismissed the entire ad as a scam. One user commented, “I mean it’s common sense you don’t need to be an intellectual to understand that this is a scam advert.”

Another joked, “If you have such a high market cap, why not list on the BSE? What good is a newspaper listing?”

Other users even questioned the ad’s authenticity, suggesting that ultra-wealthy families usually depend on private networks or matrimonial agents instead of public advertisements.
