Worms And Cockroaches Found Again In Pune University Mess, Students Call For Permanent ResolutionÂ
Pune: A shocking incident has come to light at Savitribai Phule Pune University, where worms and cockroaches were once again found in students’ meals. Following this discovery, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) confronted the mess authorities and shut it down. The incident occurred at the mess of Boys’ Hostel No. 8.
Repeated complaints about poor hygiene and pest-infested food have been raised at the university’s mess and canteens. Last night, students found insects in their meals, exposing the mess’s unhygienic conditions. ABVP activists took immediate action and demanded accountability from the mess management. A member of the university’s Food Quality Control Committee, confirmed the incident.

Over the past year, multiple similar cases have been reported, including instances where cockroaches and even hair were found in students’ meals. Despite past protests, food safety concerns persist.
Savitribai Phule Pune University hosts students from across Maharashtra and other states, raising expectations for high-quality food services. However, recurring incidents of contaminated food have once again raised serious concerns about student health and safety.
Shiva Barole, (Member, Food Quality Control Committee, SPPU) said, “Once again, insects and larvae have been found in the meals served at Hostel No. 8 mess of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). This recurring issue of contaminated food has raised serious concerns among students. On the night of February 20, students discovered insects in their food, highlighting the lack of hygiene in the mess. Activists from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) confronted the mess operator regarding the issue and subsequently shut down the facility. This is not the first instance of such negligence. Just 15 days ago, a similar incident was reported at the same mess. The ABVP has demanded strict action against the mess contractor and urged the university administration to ensure nutritious and hygienic food for students.”
