Pune: PMC Reviews Need For Fresh Environmental Clearance For Balbharati To Paud Phata Road
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a review to determine whether fresh environmental clearance is required for the construction of the Balbharati to Paud Phata road. This move aims to prevent any legal hurdles that could delay the project, which is expected to ease traffic congestion in the city.
Environmental activists had previously challenged the project in the Bombay High Court, citing concerns over deforestation and ecological damage in the Vetal Tekdi area. The court had imposed a stay on the project, but three days ago, it lifted the stay and dismissed the petition, clearing the way for the road’s construction. However, activists now plan to approach the Supreme Court to seek a fresh stay on the project.
To safeguard its stance, PMC has filed a ‘caveat’ in the Supreme Court, ensuring that no decision is made without hearing its arguments. According to PMC, the municipal body wants the court to consider its position before issuing any ruling.
While permissions for the project were obtained earlier, PMC is now reassessing whether additional environmental and forest department approvals are required. The road will span approximately two kilometers, with sections elevated to minimize disruption to the hill. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing review.
