Pune, June 13, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee has directed the civic administration to immediately prepare and submit a detailed proposal to the Maharashtra government seeking additional water allocation from Mulshi Dam, citing the city’s growing water requirements.

The directive was issued after the committee took note of reports highlighting delays in pursuing the long-pending demand for water from Mulshi Dam. Committee members questioned why the administration had not yet submitted a comprehensive plan despite repeated discussions on the issue.

At present, Pune receives water from the Khadakwasla dam project and Bhama Askhed Dam. However, with increasing demand and recurring supply shortages, the city has been seeking an additional five TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water from Mulshi Dam for several years.

The state government has already proposed allocating seven TMC of water from Mulshi Dam for Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The Water Resources Department has expressed its willingness to consider the proposal, and Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has constituted a study group to examine the matter.

However, officials noted that Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and PMRDA have yet to provide the study group with detailed information regarding their future water requirements. The administration has not prepared a blueprint outlining the quantity of water required, the areas to be served, or the projected duration for which the additional supply would be sufficient.

The issue gained urgency as Pune is set to shift to alternate-day water supply from next week due to increasing pressure on existing resources. During the Standing Committee meeting, members expressed concern over the lack of progress and instructed the administration to expedite the proposal.

“Pune city needs water from Mulshi Dam. The administration should immediately prepare a detailed plan and submit it to the state government. The Municipal Commissioner will personally follow up on the matter,” said Shrinath Bhimale, Chairman of the Standing Committee.

Employee Faces Suspension Over Budget List Dispute

In a separate development, the Standing Committee also discussed a controversy linked to the municipal budget. The dispute arose after some opposition corporators were reportedly allocated no funds in the initial budget draft, triggering political tensions.

Although the administration later agreed to provide funds to the concerned corporators, allegations surfaced that a list containing their names had gone missing from the Municipal Secretary Department, resulting in their exclusion from the budget.

Holding a staff member responsible for the missing list and the resulting omission, the Standing Committee decided to initiate suspension proceedings against the employee during Friday’s meeting.
