Divorce is often viewed as a difficult and tumultuous phase in life, leading to substantial emotional and financial changes. For many, it serves as the start of a new journey, allowing individuals to rediscover their capabilities and reshape their futures. A particularly inspiring story comes from an ex-Google techie who underwent a significant transformation after her divorce. She asserts that her income tripled following the separation, and she now earns an impressive Rs 8.7 crore each year.

In 2021, Venus Wang encountered a pivotal moment in her life when she went through a divorce, which she describes as a “wake-up call.” The 37-year-old former Google employee, now a single mother, reflected on the profound shift in her identity from being a wife to navigating life as a single parent. During that time, she faced the challenge of being unemployed for a year while caring for her daughter, with just $10,000 in savings. Despite these obstacles, Venus found the strength to rebuild her career and life, ultimately leading to her extraordinary financial success.

Originally from China, Wang had established a successful six-figure career in the tech industry after moving to the US in 2013. However, post-divorce, she had to focus on rebuilding both her career and financial stability. Today, she proudly earns a $1 million salary and works in the artificial intelligence division of a leading tech company.

Wang re-entered the workforce at Google in San Francisco, where she managed software quality and operations for well-known products like Gmail and Google Drive. After a year, she recognized her desire for more growth and decided to transition into the AI sector. Reflecting on her financial situation during her divorce, she realized she had not managed her finances well. This prompted her to adopt a new mindset, understanding that her financial decisions now impacted not just her life but also her daughter’s future.

Venus Wang took on three different positions in the field of artificial intelligence until 2024, when she decided to leave Google for a startup, only to return to another major tech company later on. These job changes allowed her to nearly triple her annual income.

While the substantial paycheck is certainly a significant advantage, Wang also finds great satisfaction in her work. She expressed to CNBC Make It, “When I walk into the office, I know I’m working on something really important to the future of this technology, and that most excites me.”

How did the internet react?

One user highlighted that building wealth is all about developing positive financial habits. They shared their experience of having just $78,000 at the age of 42 before they realized the significance of managing finances. They attributed their success to investing in the stock market and getting advice from a skilled financial advisor, emphasizing that ignoring financial literacy often leads to regret.

Another commenter found Wang’s story inspiring and recounted their own journey from near financial ruin to becoming a millionaire in just two years.  Many others praised Wang as part of the rare 1% who exhibit resilience, hard work, and unwavering dedication to their goals.
