MPCB Exposes Shocking Violations
During the inspection, MPCB officials found severe lapses, including:
- Non-functional effluent treatment plants (ETP)
- Absence of a duty officer
- Direct discharge of waste into drainage lines and Bhairoba Nullah
- Improper disposal of slaughtered animals
- Broken water pipelines causing wastewater overflow
Authorities were particularly alarmed that PMC officials lacked information about critical non-functional equipments required to operate the slaughterhouse, especially the ETP.
MPCB Assures Action Against Violations
Kartikey Langote, MPCB’s Sub-Regional Officer, expressed serious concern over the slaughterhouse’s condition. “This is a complete failure in maintaining hygiene and public health. No proper regulations are being followed. Strict action will be taken to ensure residents are not put at risk,” he told Pune Pulse.
Residents Struggle With Contaminated Water
Residents of Borade Nagar, near Kamela on Salunke Vihar Road, have been struggling with severe hygiene issues as blood-contaminated water from the slaughterhouse enters their homes. Despite multiple complaints to the MPCB, PMC, and even the Prime Minister’s Office, no permanent solution has been implemented.
Social Activist Steps In
MNS activist Rohan Gaikwad took immediate action yesterday by arranging for a water tanker to clean the affected areas and spraying disinfectants to reduce health hazards. Resident Shivaji Shinde, who has been following up on the issue, reiterated the need for a long-term solution. Another resident Kunal Borade who was present too stated that the stench is unbearable. It is difficult to breathe, the water flows from the drainage onto the road and around our houses.
Authorities Promise Action
PMC health officer Nina Borade assured that the civic body would inspect the site and implement corrective measures. Meanwhile, MPCB’s Kartikey Langhote confirmed that further action would be taken to prevent future violations.
Dr Sarika Funde, head, veterinary department, Pune Municipal Corporation stated that after the site visit the drainage department is instructed to resolve the choke up issue. Efficient working of the drainage line is needed at the site and accordingly the team is instructed.
Residents Demand Permanent Solution
Despite repeated complaints, locals continue to suffer due to inaction. They are now urging authorities to impose strict regulations on the slaughterhouses to prevent further health and environmental risks.PuneNews
