Electricity to Become Cheaper in Maharashtra! Major Announcement by Finance Minister Ajit Pawar

Maharashtra Budget 2025: Key Highlights
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar presented the first budget of the newly elected government. One of the key announcements made in the budget was a reduction in electricity tariffs over the next five years.
Electricity Tariffs to Reduce Over Five Years
For the past few years, rising electricity costs have been a major concern for Maharashtra’s citizens, often leading to public dissatisfaction with the government. During the COVID-19 lockdown, many households had to pay significantly higher electricity bills, which led to widespread protests.
The ruling Mahayuti government had promised lower electricity tariffs during its election campaign. Today, while presenting the budget, Ajit Pawar assured that power rates in Maharashtra will decrease in the next five years.
“MahaVitaran has submitted a proposal to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for determining electricity tariffs for the next five years. With strategic planning in the energy sector and increased procurement of low-cost green energy, Maharashtra’s industrial electricity rates will be lower compared to other states,” said Ajit Pawar.
Major Infrastructure Projects to Improve Mumbai’s Transport
Ajit Pawar also announced several major infrastructure projects aimed at decongesting Mumbai’s traffic and improving connectivity.
Key projects worth ₹64,783 crore:
- Coastal Roads:
- Versova to Madh
- Versova to Bhayander
- Tunnels:
- Mulund to Goregaon
- Thane to Borivali
- Orange Gate to Marine Drive
Additionally, a new elevated road is planned from Thane to Navi Mumbai International Airport to improve connectivity for cities like Thane, Dombivli, and Kalyan.
One of the major coastal road projects, Balkumbh to Gaimukh (13.45 km), is estimated to cost ₹3,364 crore and is expected to be completed by 2028.
Rural Road Development Under the Chief Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana
Ajit Pawar highlighted the progress of the Chief Minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana, aimed at improving rural roads.
- Phase 1 has been completed successfully.
- Phase 2 includes upgrading 9,610 km of roads by March 2026 with an additional 7,000 km to be concretized.
- Phase 3 will connect 3,582 villages (with populations over 1,000) to major district, state, and national highways via 14,000 km of cement-concrete roads.
- The total cost of the project is ₹30,100 crore, with ₹8,000 crore allocated for the first phase.
These initiatives are expected to enhance connectivity and economic growth in both urban and rural Maharashtra.
With promises of cheaper electricity, major transport projects, and rural road improvements, the Maharashtra Budget 2025 aims to boost infrastructure and ease public concerns over rising utility costs.
