Decline in Mango Supply Triggers Price Surge in Pune; Hapus Mangoes Cost Up to Rs 1,500 Per Dozen
Pune, March 30: With the onset of Gudi Padwa, the demand for mangoes has surged across Maharashtra. However, this year, adverse weather conditions have significantly impacted the mango harvest, leading to a sharp rise in prices in Pune’s markets. The price of the popular Hapus (Alphonso) mango has skyrocketed, ranging between ₹800 and ₹1,500 per dozen, compared to last year’s ₹500 to ₹700 for the same period.
Mango traders at Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, including Yuvraj Kachi and Arvind More, have attributed the reduced mango yield to unfavorable weather conditions. According to them, the usual cold spell in the Konkan region during November and December was absent, which affected flowering and ultimately led to lower production.
Typically, the market receives 4,000 to 5,000 boxes of mangoes daily from the Konkan region in March. However, this year, arrivals have dwindled to just 1,000 to 2,000 boxes, creating a significant shortage. A single box of raw mangoes, containing four to eight dozen, is currently priced between ₹2,500 and ₹6,000, depending on quality.
Traders predict that the peak mango season, expected between April 10 and May 10, might bring some stability to prices. However, the lower yield could result in an early end to the Hapus mango season, potentially further affecting availability and market rates in the coming weeks.
