Pimpri: In a bid to decongest one of the city’s busiest transit routes, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has expedited work on the subway at Rakshak Chowk on the Sangvi-Kiwale Road. Significant progress has been made on key structural components, with RCC box foundation work in its final stage and ramp construction on both sides advancing steadily. Once operational, the subway will ensure smoother, safer, and obstruction-free travel for thousands of daily commuters.

Currently, 80% of the casting work for the RE panels has been completed. Simultaneously, supporting infrastructure such as drainage systems and directional signage is being put in place. Temporary alternate traffic routes have been arranged to maintain smooth vehicular movement during the construction phase. Continuous on-site supervision is being conducted to ensure timely completion with the highest quality standards.

The Sangvi-Kiwale Road is a vital link connecting Pimpri Chinchwad with Pune and Mumbai. With rapid urbanisation and industrial development, traffic volume on this corridor has increased significantly. The route sees heavy usage by BRT buses, school transport, and office commuters. In anticipation of further congestion, PCMC initiated the subway project to streamline vehicular flow.

Once open, the subway will not only ease traffic bottlenecks but also contribute to fuel savings, reduce travel time, and lower environmental impact. Vehicles heading towards Pune, Aundh, Ravet, and Mumbai will benefit from a signal-free, uninterrupted route. Additionally, it will help decongest internal roads in Pimple Nilakh, especially around the gaothan area.

Project Specifications:

  • Total Length: 363 metres
  • Ramp Length (Aundh side): 125 metres
  • Subway Length: 18 metres
  • Ramp Length (Jagtap Dairy side): 220 metres
  • Subway Width: 26.4 metres
  • Subway Height: 5.5 metres
  • Tender Amount: Rs 18.65 crore

“The Rakshak Chowk subway is a significant step toward improving the city’s traffic infrastructure. The goal is to provide citizens with safer, smoother, and faster commutes. Beyond easing congestion, the project supports fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability. PCMC is committed to completing this project on time through strong inter-departmental coordination.” – Shekhar Singh, Commissioner, PCMC

“This subway will play a crucial role in eliminating the long-standing traffic snarls at Rakshak Chowk. It will offer a clear passage for vehicles travelling towards Pune, Aundh, Ravet, and Mumbai, significantly reducing travel time. Commuters headed to Pimple Nilakh gaothan will also benefit from safer turning options.” – Pramod Ombase, Chief Engineer, Civil Projects Department, PCMC
