The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has sanctioned the selection of Poonam Gupta as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Gupta, who is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, brings extensive expertise in economics and policy to her new position.

Before her tenure at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), she held the role of Lead Economist for Global Macro and Market Research at the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Gupta boasts a robust academic history, having taught at esteemed institutions such as the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) and the Delhi School of Economics. Additionally, she has worked as a researcher at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

At present, Gupta is part of the Advisory Council for the 16th Finance Commission.

Her appointment is timely, coinciding with the important Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting set for April 7-9, 2025.

She takes over from Michael D. Patra, who held the position of RBI Deputy Governor from January 2020 to January 2025, overseeing monetary policy, economic research, and financial market operations.

Throughout her career, Gupta has been affiliated with several prestigious institutions, including the Delhi School of Economics and the University of Maryland. She has also served as a visiting faculty member at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Delhi, held the RBI Chair Professor position at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), and taught at ICRIER.
