WhatsApp Image Scam Explained: What It Is and How to Protect Yourself

Cybercriminals have found a new way to target smartphone users—this time through WhatsApp images. The latest scam involves malware hidden inside pictures sent via WhatsApp, putting your personal data and finances at serious risk.

What’s the Scam?

Scammers send seemingly normal images through WhatsApp. These pictures may look harmless, but they’re embedded with malware using a technique called steganography—specifically, Least Significant Bit (LSB) encoding. This hides malicious code within the image without changing its appearance.

Once the image is opened, the malware silently activates. It can steal banking details, passwords, OTPs, UPI info, and in severe cases, allow full remote control of your phone—without any obvious signs.

Real Case: Jabalpur Victim Loses ₹2 Lakh

A man in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, received a message from an unknown number asking for help identifying someone in a photo. After several follow-up calls, he opened the image—and his phone was instantly compromised. Nearly ₹2 lakh was stolen from his bank account within minutes.

Why It’s So Dangerous

This scam doesn’t rely on fake links or forms. Simply viewing the image is enough to infect your device. It bypasses common security warnings, making it harder to detect and prevent.

How to Protect Yourself

Follow these tips to stay safe:

  • Don’t download images or videos from unknown contacts.
  • Disable auto-download for media in WhatsApp settings.
  • Use caller ID apps like Truecaller to verify unknown numbers.
  • Keep your phone’s security software updated.
  • Install a trusted antivirus app and scan your device regularly.
  • Report and block suspicious messages or calls.
  • Spread awareness, especially among less tech-savvy friends and family.
