In a major development for one of Maharashtra’s most anticipated infrastructure projects, the Thane-Borivali Tunnel Road is finally set to gain momentum. Over the past few years, numerous road development projects across the state have either been completed or are currently underway.

Among them, the proposed underground tunnel linking Thane and Borivali has been a focal point due to its potential to drastically reduce travel time and traffic congestion.

According to recent updates, the biggest hurdle in the progress of this project has now been successfully resolved. The primary issue was the rehabilitation of 87 families residing in slum dwellings at Magathane.

This task proved to be a major challenge and had caused delays in the commencement of construction work. However, with the successful relocation and rehabilitation of these residents, the path is now clear for the tunnel road project to move forward swiftly.

The tunnel project, which is expected to cost approximately ₹18,838 crore, will reduce the current travel time of two hours between Thane and Borivali to just 20 minutes.

It will feature a six-lane dual carriageway stretching 11.85 kilometers, out of which 10.25 kilometers will be an underground tunnel. The project is also expected to significantly decongest the heavily trafficked Ghodbunder Road, thereby benefiting thousands of daily commuters.

The foundation stone for this ambitious infrastructure initiative was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Although the project faced multiple roadblocks since then, the recent progress has revived hopes for its timely completion.

After the rehabilitation was completed, house keys were officially handed over to the displaced families in a ceremony attended by local MLA Prakash Surve, Deputy District Collector Rohini Phadtare, and Pankaj Sonawane.

With work on the tunnel set to commence in the coming week, the Thane-Borivali tunnel road project is poised to become a landmark achievement in Mumbai’s urban development. Once completed, it promises not only to shorten commutes but also to enhance the overall efficiency of the city’s transportation network.
