After years of waiting, Pune’s Swargate–Katraj underground metro stretch is finally set to begin construction in the next three to four months. Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi had ceremonially inaugurated the route before the last state assembly elections, actual groundwork had been delayed—until now.

Tender Reissued After Public Opposition

MahaMetro has reissued the tender for this 5.46-km underground line, signaling real progress. The earlier tender had controversially left out two important stations—Padmavati and Bibwewadi—prompting protests from local residents. Acting on public demand, Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar intervened and instructed that the two stations be included. The revised tender now includes these stops and allows a 40-day response window for interested contractors.

Construction Timeline

Once the tendering process concludes, MahaMetro expects to start construction within the next few months. “Due to strong public demand, the two stations were added. The new tender has been floated, and work is likely to begin in 2–3 months,” confirmed Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director of MahaMetro.

Improved Connectivity for Southern Pune

This long-pending metro route is expected to significantly improve transportation between Swargate and Katraj, offering a faster, safer, and more eco-friendly commute for thousands of daily passengers.
