Dog Poisoning in Pimpri: 12 Stray Dogs Poisoned Inside Gated Society, 3 Dead, 6 Critical
Pimpri, April 14: A shocking case of animal cruelty has come to light in the Mahindra Anthia Society in Pimpri, where 12 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned. Out of these, three dogs have died while six are reported to be in critical condition. The incident came to notice on Monday morning.
Priya Babulal Gugale (41), a resident of Mahindra Anthia Society, filed a formal complaint at the Sant Tukaram Nagar Police Station on Monday. Following her complaint, the police have registered a case against an unidentified individual under Section 325 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 11(1)(c) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
According to police reports, the incident occurred sometime between 10:30 PM on Sunday and 8:30 AM on Monday. An unidentified person is suspected to have fed a poisonous substance to 12 stray dogs within the society premises. As a result, three dogs died painfully, while six others remain in a serious condition. The act has sparked widespread condemnation from animal lovers and local residents.
It is common in many residential societies and city neighborhoods for stray dogs to bark at night or chase two-wheeler riders, leading some residents to demand their removal. Disputes often arise between such residents and animal welfare volunteers who feed and care for stray dogs. Several such disputes have been reported to police in the past. However, the Pimpri poisoning incident has drawn strong emotional reactions and concern from animal rights activists.
Meanwhile, some residents of 14-acre Mahindra Antheia Society had approached the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s veterinary department four days ago and complained about the stray menace.
“They made a verbal complaint stating that senior citizens are being attacked by stray canines, and it is unsafe for kids to play in the open,” a civic official said on request of anonymity.
