Traffic Study Planned At Over 25 Key Junctions Ahead Of Proposed Metro Expansion In Pune
To ensure smooth implementation of four proposed Metro corridors and reduce future traffic disruptions in the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR), a joint traffic study will be undertaken by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maha Metro. Over 25 major junctions along the routes are expected to be studied prior to the start of construction work.
The corridors under consideration include Khadakwasla–Swargate–Kharadi, Hadapsar–Loni Kalbhor, Hadapsar–Saswad Road, and Nal Stop–Warje (Manikbaug). These routes, awaiting final clearance from the government, will cover a combined length of over 48 km and pass through several critical junctions in the city.
PMC officials emphasized the need for proactive planning to avoid congestion during and after Metro development. “We plan to appoint an expert agency to assess the current traffic situation at major chowks. Their recommendations will guide the planning and execution of Metro construction to minimise inconvenience,” a civic official said.
The Hadapsar-Loni and Hadapsar-Saswad routes follow the Pune-Solapur and Pune-Saswad-Pandharpur highways, while the Nal Stop to Warje route traverses key junctions including Karve Statue, Ambedkar Chowk, and Warje Chowk. Authorities intend to conduct detailed studies of these intersections.
Currently, two Metro lines — PCMC to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi — are operational, covering 33 km. Additionally, work on the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar corridor is progressing and spans 23 km.
However, residents have voiced concerns about inadequate planning during previous Metro phases.
