The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert warning of both heatwaves and heavy rainfall across different parts of the country over the next seven days. While several regions will experience intense heat, others are likely to see thunderstorms and heavy downpours, potentially disrupting normal life.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Northeast India

From April 22 to 26, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. On April 23, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain. Winds in the region could reach speeds of 30 to 50 km/h.

Thunderstorms in Southern India

States like Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka are likely to see rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Telangana are expected to face thunderstorms and lightning over the next seven days.

Western Disturbance Impacting Northern States

A western disturbance could lead to lightning, thunderstorms, and strong winds (up to 50 km/h) in Himalayan states such as Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. This weather pattern is being caused by a cyclonic system active over northern and central Pakistan.

Showers in Central India

Rainfall is expected in parts of central Maharashtra on April 24 and 25. Gujarat may witness heavy rainfall between April 22 and 24. On Sunday, Chandrapur in Vidarbha recorded the highest temperature in the country at 44.6°C.

Rising Temperatures

In northwestern India, temperatures are expected to rise by 2-3°C over the next six days. Central India and Gujarat could see a 2°C rise over the next three days, while eastern India might experience an increase of 4 to 6°C.

Heatwave Alerts in 11 States

  • East Rajasthan: April 22–26
  • Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Odisha: April 22–25
  • Punjab: April 23–25
  • Gangetic West Bengal, West Rajasthan: April 23–26
  • Bihar, Jharkhand: April 25–26

Night temperatures in many parts of Bihar are also expected to remain high between April 23 and 26.

Delhi-NCR Weather Update

The Delhi-NCR region is likely to remain dry for the next three days, with maximum temperatures expected to rise up to 42°C. Over the past 24 hours, the maximum temperature ranged between 38°C to 40°C, while the minimum hovered around 25°C to 26°C.
