Incident during routine check triggers nationwide anger and questions police conduct

A shocking video from Nainital, Uttarakhand, has gone viral, showing a policeman slapping a female tourist, sparking widespread outrage and raising serious concerns about police behavior.

The incident took place near the Ramgarh outpost and was captured on video by the tourist’s group. In the footage, the policeman, identified as U.N. Gulab Kamboj, stops the group for riding a scooty without helmets. The situation quickly escalates when the officer suddenly slaps the woman recording the video, causing the phone to shake.

The tourists, a group of friends from Delhi, are visibly disturbed. One of them can be heard saying, “We came all the way from Delhi to visit Nainital, and the police stopped us just for not wearing helmets.” The one-minute video ends in a tense atmosphere, with the tourists upset and the confrontation unresolved.

In response, the Uttarakhand Police issued a statement saying the incident occurred during a routine vehicle inspection. They claimed the scooty had no number plate, lacked registration documents, and the pillion rider wasn’t wearing a helmet. While acknowledging the altercation, they assured a full investigation is underway.

“We are looking into the matter and will take action as per the rules against anyone found guilty, whether it’s the driver, the policeman, or the vehicle owner,” the official statement read.

Despite this assurance, public sentiment on social media has been fiercely critical. Comments such as “Wah! Or jo haath uthaya police wale ne uska kya?” and “Apki police public ki suraksha ke liye hai ya unhe pitne ke liye?” reflect growing frustration and mistrust. Others called for immediate suspension of the officer, saying: “This is just a hangover of power. You don’t have the right to slap anyone, especially a male officer hitting a female.”

The video continues to circulate widely, becoming a flashpoint in ongoing conversations about accountability and ethics within Indian law enforcement.
