Responding to concerns about Bollywood’s decline, Khan pointed to the need for more affordable theatres, especially in smaller towns and rural areas.

Speaking at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 in Mumbai, Shah Rukh Khan addressed the current challenges facing the Hindi film industry. Responding to concerns about Bollywood’s decline, Khan pointed to the need for more affordable theatres, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. He stressed that high ticket prices have made cinema inaccessible for many people and suggested that reducing costs could be key to bringing audiences back to theatres and reinvigorating the industry.

He acknowledged the increasing difficulties of film making today, noting that the rise of streaming platforms and digital media has made it harder than ever to attract viewers to traditional cinemas.

“The call of the day is a lot more theatres, simpler theatres and cheaper theatres in smaller towns and cities so that we can showcase Indian films, in whichever language, to a larger majority of Indians at cheaper rates. Otherwise, it is becoming very expensive and also, our cinemas are mostly concentrated in big towns. We keep talking about the China model with regard to the number of theatres; that can happen here as well. (Once we have more cinemas), It’ll increase footfall. Thus, we’ll be able to provide entertainment at a cheaper price and in every corner of the country,” he adds.
