Pune enjoys brief respite from heat: Unseasonal Rain, Thunderstorms Sweep Maharashtra; IMD Issues Alerts for Multiple Districts
Farmers on edge as hailstorm warnings issued across eight districts; Pune enjoys brief respite from heat
Residents of Pune welcomed light showers today that offered a brief but much-needed break from the sweltering summer heat, bringing the city’s maximum temperature down to around 34°C. However, the rest of Maharashtra is facing a more turbulent weather pattern, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) sounding multiple alerts across the state.
According to the IMD, a trough stretching from the northeast Arabian Sea to a cyclonic circulation over West Madhya Pradesh is drawing moisture inland. The interaction of this moisture with the prevailing high temperatures has triggered scattered thunderstorms, strong winds, and even hail in some parts.
Alerts in Place Across Maharashtra:
- Hailstorm warnings have been issued in eight districts: Gadchiroli, Gondia, Akola, Buldhana, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Washim, and Bhandara.
- Marathwada districts including Latur, Nanded, Parbhani, Hingoli, Beed, Jalna, Dharashiv, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar are expected to see thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds for the next five days.
- Vidarbha has already been under an alert, with rain and wind activity anticipated to intensify.
- Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri are also on yellow alert for thunderstorms and winds over the next three days.
This spell of unseasonal weather is raising concerns among farmers, especially due to the risk of hailstorms damaging crops. The continuing instability in weather conditions has left many worried as cloud cover and high humidity persist across the state.
While some regions are receiving rain, others are still experiencing extreme heat, with mercury levels touching 44°C in parts of Maharashtra, creating a difficult and unpredictable mix of weather elements.
The IMD has warned that this phase of unseasonal rain and thunderstorms is not over yet, and citizens are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
