Amid escalating hostilities between India and Pakistan, the Ministry of Civil Aviation announced the suspension of civil flight operations at 24 airports across the country as of Thursday evening. The move comes in the wake of confirmed drone and missile attacks launched by Pakistan targeting Indian cities in Jammu, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
Key airports affected by the shutdown include Chandigarh, Srinagar, Amritsar, Shimla, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Leh, and Bhuj. The Indian Air Defence Systems successfully intercepted the incoming attacks, triggering air raid sirens and temporary blackouts in multiple cities. The situation also led to the abrupt suspension of the IPL match in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
The list of closed airports includes:
Chandigarh
Srinagar,
Amritsar,
Ludhiana,
Bhuntar,
Kishengarh,
Patiala,
Shimla,
Kangra-Gaggal,
Bathinda,
Jaisalmer,
Jodhpur,
Bikaner,
Halwara,
Pathankot,
Jammu,
Leh,
Mundra,
Jamnagar,
Hirasa (Rajkot),
Porbandar,
Keshod,
Kandla,
and Bhuj.
This surge in hostilities follows India’s launch of ‘Operation Sindoor’—a targeted military response against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.
Meanwhile, airlines such as IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air have suspended services from the affected airports until Saturday. IndiGo alone cancelled 165 flights on Wednesday, while Air India diverted two international flights from Amritsar to Delhi due to the sudden shutdown. Airlines have advised passengers to arrive at operational airports well in advance due to heightened security checks.
“In these extraordinary times, we request travellers to allow extra time for their journeys. We appreciate your cooperation,” IndiGo said in a public advisory.
