In a significant move aimed at addressing long-standing sanitation issues, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced plans to build its own sewage treatment plants (STPs) across its jurisdiction. This initiative marks the first time the regional body will independently manage sewage treatment, offering much-needed relief to thousands of residents in areas such as Hinjewadi, Wagholi, and Mahalunge.

To kickstart the process, PMRDA has floated a request for proposal (RFP) for the appointment of a project management consultant (PMC). The selected consultant will study population data, assess sewage generation, and recommend the number and location of STPs required. The consultant will also oversee the planning, execution, and maintenance strategy for the proposed sewage disposal system.

Until now, PMRDA did not have its own sewage treatment system. That is set to change.” Currently, many large housing societies manage their own STPs, but there is no centralised system. Once a consultant is appointed, we will get a comprehensive plan and begin constructing the facilities.

The move comes in response to rapid urban expansion in PMRDA’s jurisdiction, with growing residential clusters facing increasing pressure on basic infrastructure. The initiative is expected to enhance waste management, reduce foul odour, and improve overall living conditions in these areas.

Residents have welcomed the announcement, calling it a long-overdue step toward better urban services.
