Pune Lashed by Intense Thunderstorm: Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds Leave City Stunned
An unexpected and powerful thunderstorm hit Pune on Monday afternoon, drenching the city with heavy rain, fierce winds, and lightning that caught residents off guard. The storm, which began around 4 PM, quickly swept through major areas such as Shivajinagar, Hadapsar, Kharadi, Peth, Pune Station, Amanora, Koregaon Park, Fursungi, Wagholi, and Magarpatta. Locals described the weather as unlike anything they had experienced before.
The sudden downpour extended to the outskirts too—Chakan, Talegaon, Alandi, Moshi, and Chinchwad reported intense showers that led to stalled vehicles and dangerously low visibility on the roads. Social media was flooded with images and videos of the storm, with many Punekars expressing shock at the intensity and rapid onset of the weather event.
Rainfall data revealed heavier showers in the city’s peripheral zones—Lavale recorded 14.5 mm, Lavasa 14 mm, Hadapsar 12 mm, and Wadgaon Sheri 11.5 mm. Central areas like Shivajinagar and Koregaon Park saw comparatively lower rainfall at 8.5 mm and 6 mm respectively. Pashan and Chinchwad received around 4 mm, while Magarpatta saw just 0.5 mm of rain.
As the city continued to receive pre-monsoon showers, temperatures dropped to a more comfortable range. Daytime temperatures hovered around 24.5°C to 25°C in areas like Shivajinagar, Pimpri Chinchwad, Koregaon Park, and Hadapsar, with a minimum city-wide temperature of 22.7°C, bringing temporary relief from the sweltering heat of the past months.
However, the sudden rainfall also exposed long-standing infrastructure challenges. Waterlogging was reported in low-lying areas such as Hadapsar and Chinchwad, while key junctions like Shivaji Nagar Metro Square and Ganeshkhind Road near Pune University saw significant traffic snarls.
With the IMD predicting continued pre-monsoon activity till May 24 and an early monsoon arrival expected along India’s coast, authorities are being urged to take proactive steps to address flooding and traffic congestion in the city.
