The Government of India has officially launched the e-Passport service, offering citizens a more secure and tech-enabled travel document. This initiative is part of the larger Passport Seva Program (PSP) 2.0, aimed at enhancing passport-related services through digitization. The e-passport rollout began on April 1, 2024, with a pilot phase in select regions.

What is an e-Passport?
The new e-passports come equipped with a built-in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an embedded antenna in the back cover. This chip securely stores biometric and personal data, including the holder’s photograph, fingerprints, full name, date of birth, and passport number. Advanced encryption methods like Basic Access Control (BAC), Passive Authentication (PA), and Extended Access Control (EAC) are used to protect this information in compliance with global standards.

Cities Currently Issuing e-Passports
e-Passports are presently being issued at passport offices in cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Nagpur, Goa, Jammu, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, and Ranchi.
