Pune MLA Hemant Rasane Seeks Five Cyber Police Stations In City To Address Surge In Digital Crimes
Citing a sharp rise in cybercrime and a mounting backlog of unresolved cases, MLA Hemant Rasane has urged the Maharashtra government to set up five new cyber police stations in Pune—one in each of the city’s police zones.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Rasane highlighted the growing strain on Pune’s only existing cyber police station.
The demand follows a major police bust in Kharadi, where a fake call centre was found duping American citizens through bogus “digital arrest” threats and extorting payments via gift cards.
The incident underscored the increasing sophistication and frequency of cyber fraud in the city.
As per official figures, Pune registered 10,692 cybercrime cases in 2022, 11,974 in 2023, and 12,954 cases in 2024. Despite the surge, only 6,204 cases in 2022, 7,069 in 2023, and 1,739 in 2024 have seen judicial closure, leaving thousands of cases pending investigation or trial.
Rasane stressed that dedicated cyber police stations in each zone would enable quicker, more technical investigations. He also recommended the recruitment of skilled personnel, deployment of additional officers, and implementation of e-office systems to modernize cyber policing infrastructure in the city.
