Monsoon progresses deeper into Maharashtra; IMD advises preparedness and action as stormy conditions expected
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for very heavy rainfall in multiple districts of Maharashtra, including Pune, Satara, and several Konkan areas, for the next five days. This alert urges residents and authorities to “be prepared” for potential relief and safety measures due to the expected intense weather.
Orange Alert Areas:
Raigad (valid only on May 26), Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and the ghat (hilly) areas of Satara, Kolhapur, and Pune are forecasted to receive heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching up to 50–60 kmph.
Yellow Alert Areas:
Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and several other nearby districts have been placed under a yellow alert, which means a warning has been issued and action is advised. These areas are expected to experience significant rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms.
Rainfall in Mumbai (last 24 hours until 8 AM):
Island City: 37 mm
Eastern Suburbs: 15 mm
Western Suburbs: 18 mm
Monsoon Progress:
As of May 25, the Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into parts of westcentral and eastcentral Arabian Sea, parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra, the entire state of Goa, the north Bay of Bengal, and into the northeastern states of Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland.
The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) now extends through Devgad, Belagavi, Mandya, Chennai, Aizawl, and Kohima, among other regions, indicating substantial spread across both peninsular and northeastern India.
Public Advisory:
Prepare for waterlogging in low-lying and ghat areas. Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain. Stay updated with IMD advisories. Keep essential supplies such as emergency kits, drinking water, and flashlights ready.
The monsoon has officially arrived, and preparedness is key to staying safe in the coming days.
