A magisterial court on Monday extended the police custody of Shashank Hagwane (27), his mother Lata (54), and sister Karishma (32) until Wednesday in connection with the alleged dowry-related suicide of 24-year-old Vaishnavi Hagwane.

During the hearing before Judicial Magistrate First Class VP Khandare, the prosecution revealed that the post-mortem examination of Vaishnavi had uncovered 30 injury marks on her body. Assistant Public Prosecutor Nitin Adagale, representing the state, informed the court that 29 of these injuries had occurred prior to her death.

According to the findings, 15 of the injuries were inflicted within 24 hours before her death and were fresh. One injury was estimated to be four to six days old, while 11 others were between five and seven days old. Two additional injuries were believed to have occurred three to six days prior to her death.

Seeking an extension of the remand, the prosecution argued that further custodial interrogation was necessary to recover the objects allegedly used to assault Vaishnavi, including a stick and other blunt instruments. Police also intend to seize remaining dowry items, including gold jewellery, which have yet to be recovered.

Authorities have already confiscated a car, scooter, and silver utensil believed to have been received as part of the dowry. Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest businessman Nilesh Chavan, who is currently absconding and suspected to be connected to the case.

Following the prosecution’s plea, the court agreed to extend the custody of all three accused to allow continued investigation.
