As the electric vehicle revolution gains momentum across India, global automakers are racing to make their mark in the evolving landscape. Japanese giant Toyota is finally joining the fray with its much-anticipated first electric SUV, the Urban Cruiser EV, which is set to arrive in India later this year.

Unveiled on the global stage in Brussels and later showcased at the Mobility Global Expo 2025 in India, the Urban Cruiser EV reflects Toyota’s vision of blending practicality, style, and sustainability. This EV isn’t just built for the Indian consumer—it’s also geared for international markets, with export plans already in motion from its production base at the Maruti Suzuki facility in Gujarat.

Bigger, Bolder, and Built to Impress

The Urban Cruiser EV stands tall as a full-sized SUV, offering more space than popular models like the Yaris Cross and Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. Based on the 27PL platform, the EV shares its underpinnings with the upcoming e-Vitara but brings its own bold and refined design language. Measuring 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase, this SUV is designed for comfort, presence, and practicality.

Its aggressive stance and international styling cues give it a distinctly modern appeal that’s likely to turn heads on Indian roads.

Power That Performs

Under the hood—or rather, beneath the floor—Toyota will offer the Urban Cruiser EV with two lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery options. The entry-level 49 kWh version is expected to produce 144 horsepower and offer front-wheel drive (FWD). The more powerful 61 kWh variant will not only boost output to 174 HP (FWD) and 184 HP in the all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration, but also deliver a driving range of over 500 kilometers on a single charge.

This puts it in direct competition with some of the longest-range EVs currently available in India. Fast DC charging support is also on the cards, ensuring less downtime and more road time.

Packed With Features for the Modern Driver

Toyota isn’t holding back when it comes to tech and comfort. The Urban Cruiser EV is expected to come equipped with:

A panoramic sunroof for an open, airy cabin experience

A 360-degree camera system to ease tight-space navigation

Powered driver seat for added convenience

Electronic parking brake with auto-hold function for safety and ease of use

10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster

Wireless charging and sliding/reclining rear seats for enhanced comfort

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) for proactive safety

JBL premium sound system for an immersive audio experience

Price and Launch Timeline

While Toyota has yet to announce the official pricing, expectations point to a range of ₹20–25 lakh, placing it in direct competition with the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV. With Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara likely arriving by September 2025, Toyota may look to fast-track its own launch, possibly rolling out the Urban Cruiser EV in the second half of this year.

With a blend of high-end features, long driving range, and export-worthy design, this electric SUV could be the brand’s ticket to success in the country’s fast-growing EV space. For buyers looking to make a stylish and sustainable switch, the wait might just be worth it.
