Pune, June 10: Three people lost their lives in a horrific road accident after a speeding cement tanker overturned near Navale Bridge on the Katraj Bypass Road in Pune shortly after midnight on Monday.

The accident took place at around 12:45 a.m. when a ten-wheeler tanker loaded with cement was travelling at high speed along the bypass road. According to preliminary information, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing the tanker to overturn beneath Navale Bridge.

The tanker reportedly crushed vehicles passing through the stretch, resulting in the deaths of three persons. One of the deceased has been identified as Rameshwar Machhindra Ugale (31), a resident of Katraj originally from Beed district. The identities of the other victims are yet to be officially confirmed.

Following the accident, the bodies were shifted to Sassoon General Hospital, and legal formalities are underway.

Teams from the PMRDA and Pune Municipal Corporation Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and carried out rescue and clearance operations. Three cranes were deployed to remove the overturned tanker, and traffic movement on the busy Katraj Bypass stretch was restored after several hours.

Personnel from Nanded Police Station, Sinhagad Police Station, Sinhagad Road Police Station, and the Sinhagad Road Traffic Division also reached the scene. Police secured the area, conducted a panchnama, and launched an investigation into the incident.

The tanker driver has been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.

The tragic accident has once again raised concerns over the movement and speed of heavy vehicles in the Navale Bridge area, a stretch that has witnessed several major accidents in recent years.
