Pune, May 31: In an unusual case, a senior official from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and their family members allegedly availed a costly cosmetic injection under the civic body’s employee health scheme, prompting scrutiny after the bill was reportedly rejected.

The official reportedly took injections of ‘Glutathione’—a high-end cosmetic procedure known to enhance facial glow and reduce pigmentation. Following the treatment, visible improvements were noted in the official’s appearance. However, when a bill amounting to nearly ₹9 lakh was submitted to PMC for reimbursement, red flags were raised.

According to sources, the official and their family were attempting to pass off the cosmetic treatment as a medical necessity, thereby trying to claim the amount under PMC’s health insurance plan. Once the administration noticed the nature of the treatment, the bill was denied by the concerned health department.

PMC runs a comprehensive health scheme for its officers and employees, spending crores annually to cover serious and chronic illnesses of its staff and their dependents. However, the misuse of this scheme for non-essential cosmetic treatments has sparked concern and debate.

Glutathione injections, which range from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh in the market, are widely known for cosmetic benefits such as skin whitening and glow enhancement. While such treatments may offer aesthetic improvements, they are not typically recognized as medically essential.

This incident has led to internal discussions about tightening the eligibility and approval process under PMC’s health reimbursement policy. Meanwhile, the concerned department has refrained from approving the bill, though the matter continues to attract attention.
