Pune Police to Cancel Permits Of Heavy Vehicles Involved In Fatal Accidents Over Last 5 Years
Pune, June 12, 2025 — In a decisive step to curb the rising number of road accidents, the Pune Police have announced that they will start identifying and seizing heavy vehicles — such as dumpers, trucks, and concrete mixers — that have been involved in fatal accidents over the past five years. The permits of these vehicles will also be permanently cancelled , Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed to Saamna.
The move follows a tragic incident at Gangadham Chowk, where Dipali Soni lost her life after a truck rammed into the two-wheeler she was riding. Her father-in-law, who was also on the vehicle, sustained serious injuries. The fatal accident has sparked widespread public outrage, with citizens demanding immediate and strict action against heavy vehicles that routinely flout city traffic norms.
Despite existing bans on heavy vehicles during specific hours and on certain roads, many continue to operate in violation of the rules, causing traffic congestion and deadly accidents . According to police data, Pune recorded 334 fatal accidents in 2024 , resulting in 345 deaths . In just the first five months of 2025, 133 fatalities have already been reported.
Joint Action with RTO
The Pune Police, in collaboration with the Regional Transport Office (RTO), will collect data on all heavy vehicles involved in fatal crashes since 2020. These vehicles will not only be impounded, but their licenses will be revoked , and in some cases, legal proceedings will follow.
Commissioner Kumar emphasized that strict enforcement measures — including vehicle seizure, permit cancellation, and court action — will be implemented against violators. The joint effort between the Traffic Police Department and Pune Municipal Corporation also aims to ensure smoother traffic flow across the city.
The administration urged citizens to follow traffic rules and support efforts to create safer roads for all.
“Heavy vehicles are a major contributor to road accidents in the city. We are taking tough action with support from the RTO to ensure public safety,”
