Pune, June 13, 2025 – In response to a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a 29-year-old woman, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has announced a temporary ban on the movement of heavy vehicles in the Gangadham Chowk area between 6 am and 11 pm daily.

The decision was made after the commissioner visited the area on Thursday. The restriction applies to trucks, dumpers, cement mixers, and other multi-axle commercial vehicles on the following routes:

  • Gangadham Chowk to Aai Mata Mandir (Shatrunjay Temple Road)
  • Lullanagar to Gangadham Chowk to Bibwewadi Road
  • Seven Loves Chowk to Gangadham Chowk

Kumar stated that a formal notification will soon be issued and height barriers will be installed with support from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to physically prevent entry of these vehicles.

The recent accident occurred despite existing restrictions on some roads, indicating ongoing violations. Since last year, heavy vehicle movement had already been prohibited on two feeder roads in the area from 7 am to 10 pm. Wednesday’s tragic incident involved a truck that illegally entered the restricted zone.

In the past year alone, three fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles have been reported at Gangadham Chowk.

To further enhance safety, the police will also crack down on illegal commercial establishments—including unlicensed shops, vegetable vendors, and godowns near Market Yard—which often attract heavy vehicle traffic. These establishments may be sealed if found operating without proper permissions.

Commissioner Kumar was accompanied during the inspection by Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma and Additional Commissioner Manoj Patil.
