Pune, June 14, 2025 — Pune witnessed its heaviest rainfall of the season on Friday evening, with Shivajinagar recording 55 mm of rain in less than three hours. The intense downpour, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions across the city.

Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated heavy rainfall across all key monitoring stations in the city. Chinchwad registered 47.5 mm, Lohegaon 45 mm, and Magarpatta 40.5 mm. Lavale recorded 38.5 mm, while NDA and Koregaon Park received 10.5 mm and 0.5 mm respectively, by 8:30 pm.

Several arterial roads turned into virtual waterways, severely affecting evening rush-hour traffic. Commuters reported long delays, with travel times stretching up to three times the usual duration. “I left Wagholi at 6 pm for Hadapsar, a 45-minute drive, but reached only at 9.30 pm. Traffic was completely stuck due to waterlogged roads,” said a commuter.

Waterlogging was especially severe on Ivy Estate Road in Wagholi and in parts of Undri. The Hadapsar-Kharadi bypass also experienced significant congestion due to accumulated rainwater.

The IMD has issued a red alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Konkan districts such as Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, and Raigad. Pune and several districts in Maharashtra are on orange alert, with forecasts predicting continued heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the next few days.

The weather forecast indicates varying rain intensities across the state. Kolhapur is likely to receive heavy showers at isolated places, while Jalgaon is expected to see light to moderate rain with thunder. Nashik may experience thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas.

A national bulletin from IMD on Friday highlighted that most areas in Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat are likely to receive light to moderate rain with thunderstorms from June 13–17. Very heavy rain is expected in parts of Konkan and Goa on June 17, and in Madhya Maharashtra between June 15 and 17. Extremely heavy rainfall — exceeding 200 mm in 24 hours — is also likely in Konkan and Goa till June 16.

Explaining the weather pattern, an IMD official attributed the intense showers to three simultaneous systems: a trough stretching from the west-central Arabian Sea to south Odisha across a cyclonic circulation over north interior Karnataka; another trough running from northwest Rajasthan to Marathwada; and the cyclonic circulation itself, which is intensifying rainfall over the region.

The Pune fire brigade responded to 34 complaints of tree falls between Thursday and Friday. Affected areas included Baner, Sinhagad Road, Kalyaninagar, Bibvewadi, Modern Colony, Pashan, Shukrawar Peth, and Kothrud.
