Is Your Brain Fried?’: HR's Shocking Reply to Sick Leave Request Sparks Outrage
A recent case in China has drawn strong reactions after a young woman shared how her HR supervisor insulted her for asking for sick leave. The issue became public on June 5 after the woman posted screenshots of their chat on social media.
The woman, who has not shared her name, said she had a fever of 37.9°C and wanted to take just one hour off from work to rest. She messaged her HR supervisor, whose last name is Huang, to ask for a short leave. But instead of support, she received harsh and insulting replies.
In the screenshots, Huang made fun of her fever, and also used rude language and questioned her ability to think clearly. At one point, he even told her to see a psychiatrist.
Take a look at what the HR said, “You’re too weak. My goodness, can’t even handle 38 degrees? Is your brain fried from the fever today, or is your menstrual period blocked and not arriving, so you can’t think before you speak?” These comments shocked many people who read the post online.
Even after the hurtful words, the woman said she continued working and stayed in touch with her team. But later, she found out that her work account had been blocked. She was also told that her performance-based pay might be cut. “You took leave but didn’t go; you just stayed there without working properly. Your actions and words don’t match – you should see a psychiatrist.”
The company first said that the issue was just a personal fight between the two. But after the post went viral, the Human Resources and Social Security Bureau of Xiaoshan District began an investigation.
Final Outcome
After the authorities stepped in, the company took action. They said the employee would not face any punishment or salary cuts. They also ended the contract of the HR supervisor, saying he had broken company rules.
In China, labour laws give workers the right to take sick leave without being punished. Many people online are now asking companies to follow these rules more strictly and treat sick employees fairly.
